Due to the paradisiacal beach and the fact that travelers and locals mix together at the sand, is one of that places you don’t want to miss on your next trip.

The rise of Guardalavaca

Guardalavaca was just an unknown place before the first hotel was built in the area, that was back in 1990. Since them the destination grew up to become the third most important touristic destination in Cuba. Just behind Havana and Varadero.

But, what is Guardalavaca and why it grew up so fast? This village is one the best secrets Cuba kept for several years. Not for Cubans, of course, but for the rest of the world. White sands, turquoise waters and coral reefs are the main attraction of the area.

The beaches are not only beautiful but quiet. You can breathe a peaceful environment and relax while you are sunbathing or enjoying into the warm waters. And if you are looking for some action, there are plenty water sports you can try.

Also, it has a local atmosphere that you can’t find at some other beaches in the island. The reason is because in Guardalavaca Cubans can enjoy the beach the same way foreign travelers do. This town is the perfect stop to recharge your energies and keep going with your trip.

Guardalavaca is located at the province of Holguín, at the eastern side of Cuba. It’s about 57 kilometers (35 miles) from the province’s capital. It has access by plain; the closest airport is Holguin’s Frank Pais International airport. By road is accessible from Santiago de Cuba which is located 174 km (108 miles) away. From Havana is 800 km (497 miles).

The city was frequented by pirates. In fact, there’s a history that says the original name was “Guardalabarca”, Spanish for guard the ship. According to this version, Cubans used the town to keep their boats safe when pirates came.

But the official name is Guardalava, meaning “guard the cow”. Farmers used this area to protect their cows from pirates.
